Justice and Peace

At Sacred Heart College we aim to ensure that Christian values such as justice, compassion and service are inherent in the curriculum and pedagogy of our College.

Inspired by the social teachings of the Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart community recognises that:

  • every person is made in the image and likeness of God and has an inherent dignity;
  • the rights and responsibilities of all people are to be respected;
  • communities are to be supported in making decisions that meet their needs;
  • we work towards a vision of the world where our resources and goods are shared amongst all our brothers and sisters.

AT SACRED HEART GIRLS' COLLEGE, WE SUPPORT:

The Society of St Vincent de Paul through their annual Winter and Christmas Appeals. The St Vincent de Paul Society works hard to assist people in need and combat social injustice across Australia. Members of the Society are people who live out their faith in action by visiting people in their homes to provide support, friendship and material assistance.

The work of the Ozanam Community Centre in serving people in need in inner-city Melbourne. Ozanam Community Centre is based in North Melbourne and is a state wide service that provides support to men and women who are at risk of homelessness, homeless and/or marginalised.

The work of Caritas Australia through their annual Project Compassion Appeal. Caritas Australia helps people help themselves - regardless of race, religion or political beliefs. They support long-term development programs in impoverished communities, helping oppressed people to rediscover their dignity by taking greater control over their lives and overcoming poverty.

The work of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDMs), who founded our College. Inspired by the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, the Sisters reach out to disadvantaged women and children on the fringe of their society. Through our support of special projects we enable the RNDM Sisters to empower these women and children, so that they may create a better future for themselves and their families

 The aim of the Benenson Society is to provide students with the opportunity to be involved in the promotion of human rights through the raising of awareness of violations of these rights and by lobbying governments on behalf of prisoners of conscience, for the end of torture and the death penalty, and asserting the rights of all to basic freedoms.
